I unintentionally snowballed into the habit of flipping project cars in high school and have owned 11 cars so far, with 7 of those being miatas. It started out with only buying/selling my main car, but turned into having two cars with one as a project. Once I realized I could have a fun side project and make some money it was all over. In total, I've spent 13.8k on project cars, sold the cars themselves for 27.6k, and profited about 12.7k in total between the cars and the parts sold off.

April 2024 | Bought: $1850 | Sold: TBD | Profit: TBD
Picked up somewhat on impulse right before leaving to CA for a internship. It didn't start, had the key stolen (apparently), a dent on the driver's side, back soft top glass broken, and was a bit dirty overall. Low mileage and completely stock on top of being a special edition made it worth it though. It only needed a new starter, battery, and key to get running and everything seems in great condition so far! Will be replacing the door/fender/carpet and a few other small things once returning to GA.

April 2023 | Bought: $6400 | Sold: $150 | Profit: $1536.96
Too good of a deal to pass up - had a bunch of mazdaspeed parts which people will pay decent money for and had a built motor + stronger 6 speed transmission which I wanted to steal for my main 95 Miata project car. Made the solo 13hr road trip to go pick it up from Indiana from GA with a uhaul. The chassis itself was too rotted to keep and fix up, so the entire car got stripped down for parts and eventually hauled off as a shell for $150. Not including the "free" built motor, turbo, and transmission I took for myself, I ended up with a decent amount of profit. Handling 60+ messages for each individual part and arranging shipping/meet up times definitely took more effort than I initially expected, but still worth it.

Running, driving, rust free, fully stock miata with a hardtop for 2.6k listed an hour ago? Of course I have to buy it! The only downside is the torn soft top... and a two tone truck bedliner paint job? This was a fun side project and reminded me of how good a fully stock miata is. I sold off the hardtop for $1800, put a soft top in it, and painted the white bedliner black to match to make it somewhat more bearable. Overall, one of the better/low effort projects of the bunch.

Dec. 2022 | Bought: $600 | Sold: $900 | Profit: $512.00
Total s***box dragged out of a field in the rain non-running. Gotta love bartering with food, brought the man two green monsters as promised and it was mine. Originally intended to use the front core support for a project, but ended up only stealing the front bumper, hood, and fenders for a different project. Amazingly, it only needed a battery and a loose ground reattached to crank up. Compression numbers were surprisingly good, so I threw it up for $1000 as the cheapest running/driving miata on facebook marketplace. Got plenty of laughs/angry comments about how it was overpriced (I agree, it was a pile and only worth it in parts or for 24hrs of Lemons) but the next day someone showed up with $900 cash and a fresh Chick-fil-a sandwich!

June 2022 | Bought: $2000 | Sold: $5000 | Profit: $1716.83
I have always loved the styling of the FC RX7 (and FD of course, but those are well out of my budget for now) and had the opportunity to pick up this 1987 FC RX7 for only 2k. It did not run when I went to look at it, but I gave it a by-ear compression test and each rotor pulse seemed healthy, so I took a gamble. Drug it home, let some oil sit in each rotor for 24hrs, open the gas tank to find it dry, added some fuel, had Rob Dahm repost my story.. and it fired up first try. To this day I don't know what changed from the previous owner to me having it, but I was ecstatic to have a running RX7. The clutch master cylinder was completely frozen and the pedal box bent up, but with a little TLC it turned into a decent driver. I really wanted to fix it up and keep it for a long time, but I couldn't afford the time or money to keep two project cars around right as I started college, so it ended up getting sold. It definitely won't be the last time I own a RX7 though.

Feb. 2022 | Bought: $1700 | Sold: $4500 | Profit: $1831.18
This is the first one I bought solely for the intention with flipping. It had been sitting for several years and needed a full tune up. I thought it wouldn't take too much to get it up and sorted, but almost all of the small things needed attention and it took a bit more than I would have liked. It did end up becoming my daily driver for a little bit while I developed the Electric Power Steering swap for my other miata and ended up doing decent profit wise despite the risk from it sitting. I think the worst part of this was having to have the mold built up in the interior professionally cleaned. The deep green metallic paint is the prettiest out of all of the cars I've owned so far though, so it balances out.

March 2020 | Bought: $3200 | Sold: $3500 | Profit: $2889.65
Not running or driving, but a decent deal given the entire unfinished turbo kit sitting with the car. Midway through the drive to SC with uhaul and money already in tow, the seller then tells me it has a rebuilt title and was previously hit in the front - red flag. I didn't know better at the time and still bought it but it caused problems getting it registered in GA for the new owner. I put the car back to stock and sold off the turbo kit, yielding a pretty good size profit for the car overall and was the first miata I flipped. The rear main seal was leaking when I first cranked it and thus I learned how to pull a transmission for the first time - not work I wanted to do, but a great way to learn nonetheless.Â

Friend's parents were looking to sell their one owner SUV that had racked up over 330k miles and wouldn't pass emissions, so I took them up on the offer. Between needing catalytic converters, new tires, and a few other things I didn't make a ton of money on this one but it was a good daily driver for a bit. Interestingly, these are based on the same platform as the 350z/G35 so it was decently sporty for the time. It also had one of the best exhaust notes of any SUV I've seen to this day (opposite of most 350z, I know haha)

Ah, the main project car. This is the first manual car I drove and has evolved and devolved through various stages throughout the year. Was a pretty good deal on a miata when I first bought it being stock, lower milage, and pretty cheap with the hardtop and rollbar already in it despite a ugly green wrap. It's cosmetically pretty rough due to being rear ended waiting to turn right at a stop light, but has a built motor and turbo making ~300whp that make up for it. It's been great for all of the trials I've put it through - fun daily, drift, track, autox, etc. - throughout the years.

Aug. 2020 | Bought: $1750 | Sold: $4000 | Profit: $2250
Great driver, but automatic and scared me with the typical BMW E46 coolant issues. I also didn't want to rip out all of the interior to install a roll cage to make it track legal, so it got sold shortly after. Great styling though, the E46 will always be timeless.

Very first car! Served me well for the few months I drove it around right after getting my license, except for the 3+ times it overheated and completely spit out all of the coolant. Oh, and the time spark plug #4 in the farthest corner of the engine ejected itself and needed to be helicoiled... anyways, it did a good job for what it was and helped me get the small initial profit to begin this whole car journey.
