Spring 2022
Having issues with the original hydraulic power steering in my 1995 Mazda Miata, I fabricated a electric power steering conversion at 1/7th the cost of commercially available kits. The EPS unit out of a Saturn Ion communicates via CANBus to a separate controller emulating the original ECU to dynamically adjust the level of assist. This allows for a completely de-powered steering rack for optimal tire feedback while on track, but the ease of single hand low speed turns on the street. The entire system reduces the mechanical complexity and avoids power steering fluid leaks near a (often) red hot turbo manifold.
Core challenges:
Eliminate old and complex hydraulic power steering
Minimize cost
Retain steering feel
Solution highlights:
No more hydraulic system!
1/7th cost of commercial kit, $175 vs $1060
Adjustable assist level, giving full range of steering feel
Packaged entirely underneath dash, retains OEM looks
